1.0Introduction

  • An application is a kind of formal letter which is often written to a higher authority while applying for something.
  • An application is a written request which is written for assistance, admission, employment, favour, information or permission.
  • An application letter is mainly a formal type of letter as it follows a predefined format which is applicable to most types of application letters.

Types of application letters

  • Leave Application letter
  • Loan Application letter
  • Scholarship Application letter
  • Visa Application letter

An application to the Principal is written for the following purposes:

  • Urging for changing the section.
  • Requesting for fee concession.
  • Taking permission for changing the opted subjects.
  • Asking for permission before placing a requirement for school supplies including stationery, sports items etc.

Things to Remember While Writing an Application

  • Designation and name of the institute should be mentioned at the top on the left-hand side.
  • Subject should be precise and should clearly depict the main reason behind writing the application.
  • As an application is a type of formal letter, it should be written in the prescribed format.
  • The content should be precise and to the point.
  • The tone and attitude reflected in an application are quite significant. Thus, the language should be decent and should carry a formal tone.
  • Writer's name should be written on the left-hand side at the end of the letter.

Q. You are Rajat/Rajasvi, the Head boy/Head girl of Saint Joseph Senior Secondary School, Delhi. You do not have the facility of learning computers in your school. Write a letter to the Principal of your school requesting him to provide the facility to the students of the school.

The Principal Saint Joseph Sr. Sec. School Dwarka Delhi 2nd March, 20xx Subject: To introduce computer learning facilities in the school. Sir With regards, I want to state that as you know this is the era of computers hence, the knowledge of the same is a must these days. So, in order to keep ourselves up with the present era, it is required that we should also introduce computer learning as an important subject and should start working on its theoretical as well as practical approach so that the children will be able to learn the same and shouldn't be lagging behind in any field.
