Speech Writing

A speech is little bit informal in its style and presentation. Since it is supposed to be delivered before a group of audience (generally students, teachers, etc.), first person (I, we) and second person (you) can be frequently used.

Important points to remember

1.0Use of Asyndeton

Asyndeton Example

  • Broken homes, failing schools, Sinking Estates.
  • A world at war, A planet in peril, The worst financial crises in a generation.
  • Government of the people, By the people, For the people.
  • Balanced minds, Balanced Diets, Balanced Lives. Use of Rhyme
  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
  • If it doesn't fit, you must acquit.

2.0Value Points for Writing A Speech

  1. Begin with an address Example: 'Respected Principal, Teachers and My Dear Friends'.
  2. Mention the purpose. ("Today I stand before you to express my views on......") 3 Put some general questions to make your speech interactive and also give answers to them soon after to avoid chaos and disturbance.

Maintain fluency using communicative language.

  • I would like to tell you .
  • You will be surprised to know .
  • Isn't it shocking/surprising/satisfying to note -.

3.0Use of CODER

(Collection of ideas) (Organise your ideas) (Draft your ideas) (Edit your ideas) (Revise your draft)

4.0Solved Example

Q. Prepare a speech that you intend to deliver in the morning assembly on 'Problems Caused by Polybags'.

Ans.

Problems Caused by Polybags

Respected Principal, Learned Teachers and My Dear Fellow-students! Today, I stand before you to express my views on the problems caused by the use of polybags. Dear friends, we see that the use of polybags has increased very much in everyday life. No doubt, they are comfortable, easy to handle, tough, beautiful and durable, but they pose a great threat to the environment around us. You will be shocked to know that these bags are harming us in many ways. A polythene is non-biodegradable substance, it does not decompose for thousands of years. As a result, the waste bags, dumped underground, cause soil pollution and turn the land barren. We bring our things in these bags from the market and on reaching home, the waste bags are thrown away. Soon, they find their way to the drains and sewage choking them. As a result, dirty water of the drains flows in the streets causing dangerous diseases. The recycled plastic bags are even greater problem. When we bring eatables packed in these bags, the eatables get contaminated as the chemicals used in making polybags gets mixed with the food. Yes, dear friends, these eatables can make us sick. We have become such slaves to convenience!

The stray animals like cows, eat them with some other eatable material. When animals eat these in large quantities, they are choked to death. Friends, polybags also cause air pollution when we burn them. Therefore, it is in our own interest that we don't use them. We should use paper bags, cloth bags and jute bags. Unless the use of polybags is totally stopped, they will continue to poison our lives. Thank you
