Can I Participate in Both AIQ and State Counselling?

Yes, eligible candidates can participate in both All India Quota (AIQ) counselling and State NEET UG counselling. This is one of the biggest advantages available to NEET-qualified students, as it increases the number of colleges and seats they can compete for. However, eligibility, domicile rules, reservation policies, and counselling schedules differ between AIQ and state counselling. Understanding these differences helps candidates make informed decisions during the admission process.

Students often assume they must choose either AIQ or State counselling, but this is not true. In most cases, candidates can register for both counselling processes simultaneously, provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria laid down by the respective counselling authorities.

1.0What Is AIQ Counselling?

The All India Quota (AIQ) counselling covers 15% of MBBS, BDS, and other undergraduate medical seats in government medical and dental colleges across India (except where specific state rules apply). It is conducted centrally by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

Through AIQ counselling, candidates can compete for seats in government colleges outside their home state, as well as central universities, deemed universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC institutions, and other participating institutes.

2.0What Is State NEET Counselling?

State counselling is conducted individually by each state's counselling authority for 85% State Quota seats in government colleges and seats in private medical colleges, depending on state regulations.

Eligibility is generally based on:

  • State domicile requirements
  • Educational qualification from the state
  • Reservation policies
  • State-specific admission guidelines

Each state publishes its own counselling schedule, registration process, merit list, and seat matrix.

3.0Can You Register for Both AIQ and State Counselling?

Yes. If you meet the eligibility conditions, you can register separately for:

  • AIQ counselling conducted by MCC
  • State counselling conducted by your eligible state authority

Registering for both counselling processes improves your admission opportunities because you are considered for a larger number of available seats.

Keep in mind that registration for AIQ does not automatically register you for state counselling. Separate applications, documents, and fees are usually required.

4.0Benefits of Participating in Both Counselling Processes

Applying for both AIQ and State counselling offers several advantages:

  • Increases your chances of securing an MBBS or BDS seat.
  • Provides access to more government and private medical colleges.
  • Allows participation in multiple counselling rounds.
  • Offers better flexibility based on NEET rank and category.
  • Enables candidates to compare college options before making a final decision.

Candidates with mid-range or borderline ranks especially benefit from participating in both counselling systems.

5.0Eligibility Requirements for Both AIQ and State Counselling

Before applying, candidates should ensure they satisfy the eligibility criteria for both counselling authorities.

For AIQ:

  • Qualified NEET UG.
  • Meet MCC eligibility requirements.
  • Fulfil category-specific reservation conditions, where applicable.

For State Counselling:

  • Qualified NEET UG.
  • Meet domicile or state eligibility requirements.
  • Submit required state-specific documents.
  • Fulfil reservation criteria prescribed by the state government.

Some states also allow non-domicile candidates to apply for private medical college seats under separate provisions.

6.0Important Points to Remember

While participating in both counselling processes, candidates should remember:

  • Register separately for AIQ and each eligible state counselling.
  • Monitor counselling dates carefully to avoid missing deadlines.
  • Upload the correct documents for every counselling authority.
  • Lock choices before the deadline.
  • If allotted a seat, carefully understand the reporting, resignation, and upgradation rules before accepting or leaving the seat.
  • Follow the latest counselling guidelines issued by MCC and the respective state authorities.

Proper planning helps candidates avoid losing admission opportunities because of missed deadlines or incomplete documentation.

7.0Does Participating in Both Counselling Affect Seat Allotment?

No. Registering for both AIQ and State counselling does not negatively affect your chances.

Each counselling authority prepares its own merit list and conducts seat allotment independently. Candidates can participate in both until they accept a seat according to the applicable counselling rules. Once a seat is accepted, future participation depends on the reporting, resignation, and upgradation policies of the respective counselling authority.
