NEET Exam Pattern Revised to CBT Mode: Key Updates for NEET 2027 Aspirants

India’s biggest medical entrance exam, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is to undergo a major upgrade from 2027. On 15th May 2026, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister, announced that NEET UG will be held in CBT mode instead of Pen-and-Paper mode. This is one of the biggest reforms in the history of the NEET examination.

This comes after the NEET UG 2026 exam was cancelled following a paper leak controversy. Following the incident, the government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) have decided to strengthen the examination process and improve transparency, security and fairness for the medical aspirants across the country.

The shift towards CBT mode is expected to bring about a big change in how NEET 2027 aspirants experience the exam, prepare for it and the examination process itself, with over 22+ lakh students taking the NEET exam each year.

1.0What is CBT Mode in NEET 2027?

Candidates will now appear for the examination on a computer at designated exam centres instead of marking answers on an OMR sheet in the CBT mode.

Candidates will:

  • Read questions on a computer screen.
  • Select answers using a mouse or keyboard.
  • Submit responses digitally.
  • Receive a computer-based examination environment similar to exams like JEE Main and CUET.

However, it is expected that the NEET syllabus, subjects and marking scheme will remain the same unless officially revised by the NTA or NMC.

2.0Key Changes Expected in NEET 2027 Exam Pattern

1. Shift from OMR Sheets to Computer-Based Testing

The biggest change is the removal of the OMR answer sheet system. Students will now answer questions directly on a computer screen.

This eliminates:

  • OMR bubbling mistakes
  • Incorrect marking issues
  • Manual scanning errors
  • Paper handling risks

2. Multiple Shifts May Be Introduced

With over 22+ Lakhs applicants, it might not be feasible to hold the NEET exam in a single shift. NTA Director General Abhishek Singh said the examination may take almost 20 shifts over several days and sessions.

This means:

  • Different students may get different question papers.
  • Difficulty levels may vary slightly across shifts.
  • Score normalization may be implemented.

3.0What is Score Normalisation in NEET CBT Mode?

Normalization is a process that is used to bring fairness in case examination is being conducted in multiple shifts with different question papers. If one shift is a bit tougher than another, normalization modifies candidate scores according to:

  • Relative performance
  • Overall difficulty level
  • Average scores across shifts

This system is already used in exams like:

  • JEE Main
  • CUET
  • CAT

The NTA is expected to introduce a transparent normalization policy for NEET 2027 if multiple shifts are conducted.

4.0Advantages of CBT Mode for NEET Aspirants

  1. Better Security: CBT mode minimizes the chances of paper leakage and unauthorized access to question papers.
  2. Faster Result Processing: Digital exams enable fast assessment and timely declaration of results.
  3. Reduced Human Error: The possibility of errors is less compared to OMR-based evaluation.
  4. Improved Transparency: Computer-based testing allows for better tracking and the testing conditions to be standardized.
  5. Instant Response Saving: Answers are automatically saved during the examination, reducing the risk of response loss.

5.0Challenges Students May Face

While CBT mode offers several advantages, it may also create challenges for some candidates.

  • Digital Familiarity: Students from rural or non-technical backgrounds may initially struggle with computer-based exams.
  • Increased Anxiety: Many NEET aspirants are more comfortable with traditional paper-based exams.
  • Multi-Shift Competition: Normalization and multiple shifts may create concerns regarding fairness among candidates.
  • Time Management Changes: Attempting questions on a computer screen may require a different strategy compared to OMR-based tests.

6.0How Should Students Prepare for NEET 2027 CBT Mode?

  1. Practice Online Mock Tests: Students should start practicing regular CBT-based mock tests.
  2. Improve Computer Familiarity: Practice basic computer skills such as navigating screens, clicking on answers, and reviewing questions.
  3. Focus on Speed & Accuracy: Computer tests require rapid decision-making and effective navigation.
  4. Adapt to Digital Examination Environment: Get used to the digital testing environment. Candidates will need to become familiar to reading long questions on a screen.
  5. Follow Official Updates: Students are advised to regularly check the official NTA website for updates regarding:
  • Exam pattern
  • Normalization policy
  • Shift details
  • Mock test availability
  • CBT guidelines

7.0Will the NEET 2027 Syllabus Change?

As of now, there is no official announcement regarding major syllabus changes for NEET 2027. The syllabus is likely to continue following the National Medical Commission (NMC) prescribed NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus. Candidates are advised to wait for the official NEET 2027 information bulletin for confirmation.

8.0Impact of CBT Mode on Medical Entrance Examinations

The switch to the CBT mode is expected to make the NEET examination system similar to other major national level entrance examinations held in India and also modernize the same.

The government believes this step will:

  • Improve examination security
  • Restore student confidence
  • Reduce malpractices
  • Enhance transparency in medical admissions

If implemented successfully, CBT mode could become a long-term solution for conducting India’s largest medical entrance examination securely and efficiently.

9.0Why is NEET UG Moving to CBT Mode?

The move to Computer-Based Test mode was strongly recommended by the Radhakrishnan Committee formed after the 2024 and 2026 NEET controversies. The committee has identified the traditional OMR-based examination system as one of the major vulnerabilities responsible for paper leaks and examination malpractice.

According to the committee, the CBT mode is considered a safer and more secure system because:

  • Question papers are digitally encrypted.
  • There is no physical transportation of papers.
  • Risk of paper leaks is minimized.
  • Candidate monitoring becomes easier.
  • Examination processes become more transparent and standardised.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that even after implementing many recommendations in the past, paper leak-related incidents still took place. Thus, the government decided to switch over completely to the CBT mode for examination from 2027.
