India’s biggest medical entrance exam, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is to undergo a major upgrade from 2027. On 15th May 2026, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister, announced that NEET UG will be held in CBT mode instead of Pen-and-Paper mode. This is one of the biggest reforms in the history of the NEET examination.
This comes after the NEET UG 2026 exam was cancelled following a paper leak controversy. Following the incident, the government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) have decided to strengthen the examination process and improve transparency, security and fairness for the medical aspirants across the country.
The shift towards CBT mode is expected to bring about a big change in how NEET 2027 aspirants experience the exam, prepare for it and the examination process itself, with over 22+ lakh students taking the NEET exam each year.
Candidates will now appear for the examination on a computer at designated exam centres instead of marking answers on an OMR sheet in the CBT mode.
Candidates will:
However, it is expected that the NEET syllabus, subjects and marking scheme will remain the same unless officially revised by the NTA or NMC.
1. Shift from OMR Sheets to Computer-Based Testing
The biggest change is the removal of the OMR answer sheet system. Students will now answer questions directly on a computer screen.
This eliminates:
2. Multiple Shifts May Be Introduced
With over 22+ Lakhs applicants, it might not be feasible to hold the NEET exam in a single shift. NTA Director General Abhishek Singh said the examination may take almost 20 shifts over several days and sessions.
This means:
Normalization is a process that is used to bring fairness in case examination is being conducted in multiple shifts with different question papers. If one shift is a bit tougher than another, normalization modifies candidate scores according to:
This system is already used in exams like:
The NTA is expected to introduce a transparent normalization policy for NEET 2027 if multiple shifts are conducted.
While CBT mode offers several advantages, it may also create challenges for some candidates.
As of now, there is no official announcement regarding major syllabus changes for NEET 2027. The syllabus is likely to continue following the National Medical Commission (NMC) prescribed NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus. Candidates are advised to wait for the official NEET 2027 information bulletin for confirmation.
The switch to the CBT mode is expected to make the NEET examination system similar to other major national level entrance examinations held in India and also modernize the same.
The government believes this step will:
If implemented successfully, CBT mode could become a long-term solution for conducting India’s largest medical entrance examination securely and efficiently.
The move to Computer-Based Test mode was strongly recommended by the Radhakrishnan Committee formed after the 2024 and 2026 NEET controversies. The committee has identified the traditional OMR-based examination system as one of the major vulnerabilities responsible for paper leaks and examination malpractice.
According to the committee, the CBT mode is considered a safer and more secure system because:
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that even after implementing many recommendations in the past, paper leak-related incidents still took place. Thus, the government decided to switch over completely to the CBT mode for examination from 2027.
