Frequently Asked Questions

Students must score a minimum of 33% marks in each subject to pass the UP Board Class 10 examination.

NCERT textbooks are the primary reference for all subjects. For additional practice, Oswaal Question Banks, Arihant's All-in-One, and Sankalp Guides are widely recommended.

Maintaining a focused study routine of 6–8 hours daily, distributed across subjects, is ideally recommended. Prioritise weak areas while maintaining regular revision of all subjects.

They are extremely important. Previous year papers reveal frequently asked questions, marks distribution patterns, and help you practice time management under conditions similar to the real exam.

Ideally, begin your final revision 2–3 weeks before the exam dates. Use this time to go through short notes, solve mock tests, and revisit weak areas rather than starting new topics.

No. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers in the objective (MCQ) section of UP Board Class 10 papers. Students should attempt all objective questions.

Top Preparation Tips for UP Board Class 10 Exams

The UP Board Class 10 examination, conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, is among the most significant educational milestones for students in Uttar Pradesh. Every year, many students across the state sit for the UP Board Class 10 examination, and more than double that number are expected to do so in the next five years. Therefore, how well a student performs on the UP Board Class 10 examination depends significantly on their preparation (as recommended by both the UP Board and subject-matter experts).

1.0Understand the UP Board Class 10 Exam Pattern

Before diving into preparation, it is essential to clearly understand the UP Board Class 10 exam pattern. Each subject carries 70 marks in theory—split into 20 marks for objective (MCQ) questions and 50 marks for descriptive questions— along with 30 marks for internal/practical assessment, totalling 100 marks per subject. The exam duration is 3 hours, with an additional 15 minutes to read the question paper. Exams are conducted offline (pen-and-paper) in two shifts. There is no negative marking for incorrect objective answers. The minimum passing marks are 33% in each subject.

Knowing this structure helps students allocate time during the exam and plan their preparation accordingly — spending more time on descriptive writing practice while not neglecting the objective section.

2.0Create a Study Schedule

A well-structured study schedule is the backbone of effective UP Board Class 10 preparation. Follow these steps to build one:

  • Use the UP Board Class 10 syllabus available on upmsp.edu.in to plan out a checklist for the chapters and topics for each subject.
  • Set aside specific time each day to study each subject, giving additional time to the ones you find most challenging.
  • Set weekly targets — decide which topics or chapters you will complete each week and review progress at the end of it.
  • Reserve the last 2–3 weeks before exams exclusively for revision, mock tests, and solving past papers.
  • Be consistent. A moderate but regular study routine of 6–8 hours daily is more effective than last-minute cramming.

3.0Prioritising Topics while Preparing for Class 10 UP Board Exam

Not all topics carry equal weightage. Smart prioritisation ensures you score well in high-mark areas first. Here is how to approach it:

  • Go through the UPMSP marking scheme and identify chapters that carry the highest marks in each subject.
  • In Mathematics, concentrate on algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, as they are generally given a large number of marks across all UP Board exams.
  • In the sciences, concentrate on the following topics: research; how electricity works; how light works; how chemicals interact; and how living things work; because these subjects will likely have a greater amount of questions and marks associated with them than many other subjects.
  • In social studies (geography and history), practice answering map questions and important historical events so that you can earn more points.
  • In both Hindi and English, regular practice of grammar; and of writing (essays and letters) can often help you earn a lot of marks.
  • Complete dense and difficult topics first so that you have ample time for revision closer to the exams.
  • Use NCERT textbooks as the primary reference for all subjects except languages, as UPMSP follows the NCERT curriculum.

4.0Mock Tests and Previous Papers for UP Board Class 10 Exams

Solving mock tests and previous year question papers is one of the most effective preparation strategies for the UP Board Class 10 exam. Here is how to use them:

  • Simulate real exam conditions: Attempt each paper within the exact time limit — 3 hours 15 minutes — without any interruptions or reference to notes.
  • Analyse your performance: After each mock test, review answers carefully. Identify which sections took too long and which topics led to errors.
  • Practice at least 5–7 years of UP Board Class 10 previous question papers to understand recurring question types, important topics, and the difficulty level of the exam.
  • Use UPMSP model papers (available on upmsp.edu.in) to familiarise yourself with the latest exam pattern and the distribution of objective versus descriptive questions.
  • Track your scores across mock tests to monitor improvement and identify subjects that need more attention.
  • Aim to attempt at least one full-length mock test per subject every week, increasing frequency as the exam dates approach.

5.0Revise Regularly

Revision is as important as studying new topics. Without regular revision, even well-studied concepts can be forgotten under exam pressure.

  • Maintain a separate revision notebook for each subject with key formulas, definitions, dates, diagrams, and important points summarised in your own words.
  • Revise completed chapters at least once a week to keep them fresh in memory.
  • Use the last 2–3 weeks before exams solely for revision — go through all short notes, re-attempt weak areas, and solve additional objective questions.
  • You should review all formulas and theorems in mathematics every day and do at least some problem practice from every chapter on a regular basis.
  • You can draw key diagrams in your science subjects from memory to ensure you have retained them.
  • In language subjects, working on your grammar rules through revision and continuing to write regularly will assist you in keeping your speed and accuracy up.

6.0Maintain Physical & Mental Health

Exam preparation can be stressful, but maintaining your physical and mental wellbeing is essential for sustained performance.

  • Sleep for at least seven to eight hours each night. Adequate amounts of sleep help with memory consolidation and concentration.
  • When studying for long periods (greater than one hour) remember to take a break and do something relaxing for ten to fifteen minutes in order to help you recharge and keep your focus.
  • Eating healthy and well balanced meals will help improve performance on tests; avoid caffeine and junk foods while preparing for a test.
  • Include light physical activity — a short walk or stretching — in your daily routine to reduce stress.
  • Remain relaxed and do not get worked up if you are feeling under pressure - consider talking to a teacher, family member or another adult you can trust about your feelings.
  • Do not compare how prepared you are to your classmates; concentrate on developing your own study program and measuring your own progress.
  • Try not to stay up all night studying before each exam but spend time doing a light review of your notes and going to bed early to be able to think clearly during the exam.

7.0Seek Guidance When Needed

No student should feel they have to prepare entirely alone. Seeking timely guidance can make a significant difference in performance.

  • Approach your subject teachers whenever you are stuck on a concept or topic. Do not let doubts accumulate.
  • Form study groups with classmates to discuss difficult topics and quiz each other — this reinforces learning for all members.
  • Refer to UPMSP's official preparation guidelines, released on upmsp.edu.in, for subject-specific advice endorsed by the board.
  • Use trusted reference books such as Oswaal Question Banks, Arihant's All-in-One, or Sankalp Guides for supplementary practice.

Scoring well in the UP Board Class 10 exam requires a combination of understanding the exam pattern, disciplined time management, smart topic prioritisation, and consistent practice.
