About the Poet
Rabindranath Tagore was a great Indian poet, writer, philosopher, and musician. He was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his book Gitanjali. First Stanza: Memory Through Sound
The first stanza is about the poet's faint and emotional memory of his mother. He says he doesn’t remember her clearly, but sometimes he hears a familiar tune in his mind while playing. The tune put him in mind of a song his mother had hummed, rocking his cradle. This proves that even when her memory is fading, the feeling of her love and care is still lingering in his heart thru the music he remembers.
Second Stanza: Memory Through Smell
In the second stanza the poet states that he does not have a clear memory of his mother but some smells remind him of her. In the early autumn morning, the smell of shiuli flowers and the smell from the temple remind him of her. In the third stanza, the poet says that he cannot quite remember his mother, but when he looks out his bedroom window at the big blue sky, he feels her there.
