2.0 Important Concepts of Class 9 Science Chapter 3: Tissues in action 

Plant vs Animal Tissues — Key Differences  

  • Plants are fixed in place → need rigid cell walls for support; animals move → cells lack rigid walls, allow flexibility.
  • Plants make their own food (photosynthesis); animals have digestive tissues to obtain nutrients.
  • Both have transport tissues (water, food, gases); growth tissue structure/function differs between the two.

Growth Tissues in Plants  

  • Annual growth rings: seen in tree trunk cross-section; formed yearly, width varies with growing conditions → used to estimate tree age and past climate.
  • Intercalary meristem: present at nodes of stem; responsible for regrowth after cutting/grazing (e.g., hedges, grass, lawns).
  • Lateral meristem: produces cork cambium beneath epidermis as stem matures → forms cork cells (dead, tightly packed, impermeable) → together form bark.

  • Can divide to form new cells.
  • Used in bone marrow transplants for blood cancers (leukemia) and genetic disorders (thalassemia).

Totipotency (F. C. Steward's Carrot Experiment, 1958)  

  • A single phloem cell of carrot, cultured in nutrient medium (sugars + hormones), can dedifferentiate → form undifferentiated cell mass → redifferentiate into roots, shoots, and a complete plant.
  • Totipotency: ability of a cell to develop into a complete organism (similar to zygote development).
  • Animal cells generally lack this level of totipotency.

  • Commercial uses of totipotency: micropropagation (rapid plant multiplication), production of disease-free/improved plant varieties.

Crown Gall Disease  

  • Caused by bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
  • Tumour-like swellings form on stems due to uncontrolled cell division.
  • Its gene-transfer mechanism is now used as a tool in plant tissue culture & genetic engineering — for improved crops, phytochemical production, and disease-resistant plants.
