Earthworms belong to Annelida and have segmented cylindrical bodies but no jointed legs. Therefore, the presence of jointed legs confirms that the animal is an insect. 2. Sponges represent one of the simplest animal body plans. Their bodies lack true tissues and organs. Which feature of sponge cells supports its classification under the animal kingdom? (i) Absence of mitochondria (ii) Ability to photosynthesise (iii) Presence of a cell membrane (iv) Presence of a cell wall

Ans. (iii) Presence of a cell membrane Sponges are classified under Animalia because animal cells possess a cell membrane and lack a cell wall. They are multicellular animals even though they lack true tissues and organs. 3. Observe two different animals in your immediate environment. What features help you distinguish between them? How do these features help place them into different groups?

Ans. A butterfly and an earthworm.

  • Butterfly has jointed legs, wings and an exoskeleton.
  • Earthworm has a cylindrical segmented body without legs. These features place the butterfly under Arthropoda and the earthworm under Annelida. Thus, differences in body structure and movement help place them into different groups.

4.How would a scientist justify choosing cellular organisation as a more fundamental characteristic for the basis of classification rather than the presence of xylem and phloem?

Ans. A scientist would choose cellular organisation as a more fundamental basis because it is present in all organisms and helps distinguish major groups such as prokaryotes and eukaryotes, unicellular and multicellular organisms. Xylem and phloem are found only in certain plants and therefore cannot be used to classify all living organisms.

5.You find an unlabelled slide of a singlecelled organism that has a well-defined nucleus and multiple cilia. Which group would it most likely belong to? Give reasons.

If you were asked to revise the five kingdom classification, would you create a separate category for viruses or keep them outside the system? Ans. Viruses may be kept outside the five kingdom system because they lack cellular organisation, which is a major basis of classification.

However, a separate category may also be created because viruses possess genetic material and show some living characteristics inside host cells.

(iv) Explain why organism S cannot be classified using the mode of nutrition alone. (v) Organism T does not fit into any of the five kingdoms. Which fundamental characteristic used in classification does it lack and what does this reveal about the limitations of classification systems? (vi) If classification were based only on habitat, which organisms might be incorrectly grouped together? Explain the scientific consequences of such a classification. (vii)Imagine scientists discover a new organism that is multicellular, eukaryotic, lacks chlorophyll and absorbs nutrients from a host externally. Should it be placed under fungi or animalia? Justify your reasoning using classification criteria.

Ans. Based on the case study (i) Q belongs to the Kingdom Fungi. Supporting observation: It is multicellular, lacks chlorophyll and grows on dead organic matter, showing a heterotrophic mode of nutrition typical of fungi. (ii) P belongs to the Kingdom Monera. Justifying characteristic: It has no true nucleus (prokaryotic cell). (iii) Although both are eukaryotic, R is unicellular and therefore belongs to Protista, while Q is multicellular, lacks chlorophyll and obtains food from dead organic matter, characteristics of Fungi. Thus, level of organisation and mode of nutrition separate them. (iv) Mode of nutrition alone is not sufficient because many organisms are heterotrophic. S is multicellular, has well-differentiated tissues and a backbone, which are important structural characteristics used to place it in Animalia (Chordata). Classification requires multiple criteria, not only nutrition. (v) T lacks cellular organisation, as it is acellular. The five-kingdom classification is based on cellular organisation, so viruses do not fit into any kingdom. This shows that classification systems may not accommodate all forms of life and may need revision as scientific knowledge advances. (vi) R (Protista) and S (Animalia) may be grouped together because both can be found in aquatic environments. Similarly, P (Monera) and Q (Fungi) may occur in moist environments. Such classification would ignore important differences in cell type, level of organisation and mode of nutrition, leading to inaccurate understanding of relationships among organisms. (vii)It should be placed under Kingdom Fungi. According to the classification criteria, fungi are multicellular eukaryotes, lack chlorophyll, and obtain nutrients by external absorption from dead matter or hosts. Animals are heterotrophic but ingest food internally rather than absorbing it externally. Therefore, the organism matches the characteristics of fungi.
