2.0Important Concepts of Class 9 Science Chapter  11 - Reproduction: How Life Continues  

Reproduction Basics    

  • Reproduction – the formation of new organisms from existing ones of the same species
  • Maintains species stability (not needed for survival of the individual)
  • Basic event:
    • DNA replication
    • Replicated DNA is handed down to daughter cells
  • Variation – the extent to which offspring are different from their parents
  • Variation aids adaptation and evolution
  • Significance:
    • Continuity of species
    • Adds variation for evolution
    • Maintains population size

Types of Reproduction    

  1. Asexual – single parent, no gametes, offspring genetically identical.
  2. Sexual – two gametes (male + female) fuse, produces variation.

  • Germ Theory of Disease (Louis Pasteur): diseases caused by microorganisms; new life arises from pre-existing life.

Vegetative Propagation    

Natural: by leaves (Bryophyllum), by stem (Potato, Ginger), by roots (Sweet potato, Dahlia). Artificial:

  • Cutting – stem part planted in soil (Rose, Sugarcane, Cactus).
  • Grafting – stock (rooted plant) + scion (cut part); not possible in monocots (Mango, Apple).
  • Layering – branch bent & buried, develops roots while attached (Citrus, Jasmine, Hibiscus).
  • Tissue culture (micropropagation) – explant → callus → plantlet, disease-free plants (Orchids, banana).

Advantages: rapid/cheap, disease-free plants, superior quality, genetically identical, early flowering/fruiting, useful for seedless plants (banana, rose, jasmine).

Sexual Reproduction & Meiosis    

* Formation of gametes (by meiosis) (chromosome number reduced)

* Fertilisation brings back the original number of chromosomes.
* Steps: gamete formation → fusion (zygote) → development into new individual .

  • Agencies: Wind (Anemophily), Water (Hydrophily), Insects (Entomophily), Birds (Ornithophily), Bats (Chiropterophily).

Fertilization    

  • Pollen germinates → pollen tube → enters ovule via micropyle → releases male gametes.
  • One gamete fuses with egg → zygote.
  • After fertilization: Ovary → fruit; Ovule → seed.

Human Reproductive Systems    

Male: Testes (produce sperm + testosterone), Scrotum (thermoregulation), Vas deferens, Urethra, Accessory glands (prostate, seminal vesicle) → semen, Penis.

Female: Ovaries (produce egg + estrogen/progesterone), Fallopian tube (site of fertilization), Uterus (embryo development), Vagina (birth canal).

Fertilization, Implantation & Pregnancy    

  • Ovulation: release of egg (~monthly).
  • Fertilization occurs in oviduct → zygote → implants in uterus lining (implantation) → pregnancy begins.
  • Pregnancy = ~9 months, 3 trimesters; embryo called foetus after week 9.

Menstrual Cycle    

  • ~28 days; begins at puberty (10–14 yrs), ends at menopause (~50 yrs).
  • If no fertilization → uterine lining sheds → menstruation (3–7 days).

Sex Determination    

  • Humans: 23 pairs of chromosomes; 23rd pair = sex chromosomes (X, Y).
  • Female = XX; Male = XY.
  • Egg always carries X; sperm carries X or Y → father's chromosome determines sex of child.

Reproductive Health    

  • STIs: gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes, genital warts, HIV/AIDS; condoms reduce risk.
  • Contraception methods: Barrier (condoms), Hormonal (pills), IUDs (Copper-T), Surgical (vasectomy/tubectomy).
