Proportional Reasoning

2.0Key Features of Chapter 7 Proportional Reasoning

  • Concept of Ratio:  It tells you how to compare two amounts.
  • Proportion Basics: Shows how to make proportions and how two ratios are the same.
  • Direct Proportion: Talks about times when one amount goes up with another.
  • Unit Rate: Shows how to compare things by unit to make them easier to understand.
  • Problem Solving: Uses ratios and proportions in real life.
  • Real-World Examples: These include things like the relationships between speed, price, and quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A ratio compares two quantities showing their relative sizes, written as a:b or a/b. Example: 2:3 means for every 2 red balls, there are 3 blue balls

Proportion shows two ratios are equal, like a:b = c:d. Example: 2/4 = 3/6 confirms both simplify to 1:2 ratio.

In direct proportion, if one quantity doubles, the other doubles too (y = kx). Example: More workers mean more output at same rate per worker.

In inverse proportion, one quantity increases while the other decreases (xy = k). Example: 4 workers take 6 days; 6 workers take 4 days for same job.

Used in cooking recipes, shopping discounts, and travel speed-time calculations. Example: Scale recipe 2:1 or calculate fuel needed for distance.
