Colleges Offering Home State Quota
JoSAA Reservation Policy

Frequently Asked Questions

The Home State Quota is available in all 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) participating in JoSAA counselling. Each NIT reserves Home State seats for eligible candidates from its respective state or Union Territory.

No. IITs do not offer a Home State Quota. Admissions are based entirely on JEE Advanced ranks and the Government of India's reservation policy.

Some IIITs may have institute-specific reservation policies, but there is no universal Home State Quota across all IIITs. Candidates should refer to the JoSAA Business Rules and seat matrix for the institute they are applying to.

Your Home State is generally determined by your State Code of Eligibility, which is usually based on the state or Union Territory where you first passed the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination, not your domicile or permanent residence.

Most NITs reserve approximately 50% of their seats for Home State candidates. However, a few institutes, such as NIT Goa and NIT Srinagar, follow special Home State seat-sharing arrangements as specified in the JoSAA Business Rules.

Colleges Offering Home State Quota in JEE Counselling

The Home State Quota is mainly used in the NITs that participate in JoSAA Counselling as an element in seat reservations. The reservation of approximately 50% of the seats in each of these colleges is given to candidates whose State Code of Eligibility matches their state of residence; therefore, these candidates have an advantage to obtain engineering admission into colleges in their home state.

While IITs grant admission to students from around India without any regard to home state or origin, when allocating seats at the NITs, two types of reservations are used: "Home State" and "Other State." Home State Quota will be automatically applied to candidates according to their State Code of Eligibility based on which state they took their Class 12 (or equivalent) exam.

2.0Do IITs Offer Home State Quota?

No, the home state quota is not applicable for the IIT's. IIT admissions are based solely on the rank in the JEE Advanced exam through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). All candidates compete for IIT admittance on an ALL-INDIA basis and within their respective categories of reservation.

3.0Do IIITs and GFTIs Offer Home State Quota?

The Home State quotas for the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Government Funded Technological Institutes (GFTIs) do not follow a standardised pattern.

  • Some IIITs and GFTIs follow institute-specific seat allocation rules.
  • Certain institutes may reserve seats for candidates from the host state, while others admit students purely through the All India merit list.
  • Candidates should check the JoSAA seat matrix and Business Rules for institute-specific details before filling their choices.

4.0Benefits of Choosing a Home State NIT

Applying to your Home State NIT offers several advantages:

  • Competition is limited to candidates from the same state.
  • Home State cutoffs are often more relaxed than Other State cutoffs.
  • Better chances of securing popular branches based on your JEE Main rank.
  • Reduced relocation and accommodation expenses.
  • Opportunity to study closer to family while accessing quality technical education.
