Home State Quota in JEE Counselling 2026: Eligibility, Reservation, Benefits, Cutoffs & Admission Process
In JEE Main Counselling, one of the key reservation policy is Home State Quota (HS Quota). Home State Quota gives eligible candidates an opportunity to compete for NITs' (National Institute of Technology) reserved seats located in their own state. Approximately 50% of a total number of seats (approximately 4000 available) within NIT are according to the Home State candidates, and the other half is filled according to Other State (OS) Candidates.
Through reservations for Home State Candidates, there are favourable admission conditions for local aspirants in their chosen engineering streams, such as Computer Science (CSE), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Information Technology (IT), and Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE).
Many aspirants registering for JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) make mistakes due to the confusion concerning Home State, Domicile and State of Eligibility definitions. As such, it is very important that aspirants who intend to participate in JEE Main Counselling are aware of all three concepts.
1.0What is Home State Quota in JEE Counselling?
Under the Joint Seat Allocation Authority's (JoSAA) Home State Quota, about half of the total number of seats available in each National Institutes of Technology (NIT) is set aside specifically for applicants whose "Home State" is the same as the NIT's location. These applicants vie only against these same students when applying for their Home State NITs or any of those NITs.
For example:

Many JEE aspirants mistakenly believe that their domicile certificate will help determine their home state. A candidate’s home state is generally determined by JoSAA based on the state of eligibility for the candidate, which is usually the location in which the candidate passed Class 12 (or equivalent) examinations as well as provided that there are some exceptions to candidates that have completed Class 12 outside of India or at institutions with special eligibility requirement(s)
