NIT-wise Home State Cutoffs
NIT Home State Cutoff means Minimum & Maximum Admission Rank (opening rank) which taken for awarding Admission to each Seat in any NIT in HS Quota. The Home State Cutoffs for each Institute; For A Particular Branch; In A Particular Category; For A Particular Gender; And For Available Seats are published by JoSAA after the completion of each Counselling Round.
For HS Quota there is no Competition with Applicants across India, only Competition with Applicants having State Code of Eligibility (for HS Quota) of the State In Which The NIT is Located (which is different than Other State Quota). Home State Cut Offs Will Generally Be More Favourable than Other State Cut Offs, But This Is Not True For All Institutes / Branches / Categories / Genders or Available Seats.
1.0How are NIT Home State Cutoffs Determined?
JoSAA releases separate opening and closing ranks for every NIT based on several factors, including:
- JEE Main All India Rank (CRL)
- Home State Quota
- Reservation category (OPEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD)
- Gender (Gender-Neutral/Female-Only)
- Engineering branch
- Counselling round
- Seat availability
Since cutoffs are published after each round, the final-round closing rank generally provides the most realistic benchmark for future aspirants.

The following table shows how the Home State Quota applies to different NITs.
Note: Some institutes have institute-specific seat-sharing provisions under the JoSAA Business Rules. Candidates should always refer to the latest JoSAA seat matrix for exact eligibility.
Expected Home State Cutoff Trends for Top NITs
Although the exact cutoff changes every year, top NITs generally require stronger JEE Main ranks for Computer Science Engineering and other high-demand branches.
For core branches such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Production Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, the Home State closing ranks are generally more relaxed than those for Computer Science or Information Technology.
3.0Why Do Home State Cutoffs Vary Across NITs?
The Home State cutoff depends on multiple admission-related factors, including:
- Number of Home State applicants
- Difficulty level of JEE Main
- Institute reputation
- Popularity of the engineering branch
- Seat matrix approved by JoSAA
- Reservation category
- Counselling round
- Availability of Female-Only and Gender-Neutral seats
For example, Computer Science Engineering at NIT Trichy usually closes at a much stronger rank than the same branch at many newer NITs because of higher demand and limited seat availability.
