Female Supernumerary Seats in JEE Counselling 2026
Additional supernumerary seats for female candidates were introduced by the government of India to increase female representation in premier engineering institutions through the gradual introduction of these seats. The concept of supernumerary male and female supernumerary seats means that all seats available to both males and females remain unchanged at the institution and are considered additional in number.
Candidates will have the same available number of seats as anyone else (GN + FS = total), with the main difference being that female candidates can compete for both GN and female supernumerary seats.
What are Female Supernumerary Seats?
Supernumerary seats for females are for female applicants exclusively. These extra female supernumerary seats are added to the original seats already established in the Sitz plan and will be marked as Female Only on Official JoSAA Sitz Plan.
For example, let's say a particular BTech program has 100 approved seats, JoSAA could add female-only supernumerary seats to enhance female representation.
Note: This does not decrease the total number of available seats under the Gender-Neutral category of 100 approved seats.
1.0Objective of Female Supernumerary Seats
The Government of India introduced Female Supernumerary Seats to:
- Increase female participation in engineering education.
- Improve gender diversity in technical institutions.
- Encourage more female students to pursue STEM programmes.
- Provide additional admission opportunities without reducing existing seats for other candidates.
2.0How Do Female Supernumerary Seats Work?
During JoSAA counselling, a female candidate is considered for two separate seat pools:
- Female-Only (Supernumerary) Seats
- Gender-Neutral Seats (open to both male and female candidates)
This means female candidates effectively have two opportunities to secure admission, whereas male candidates compete only for Gender-Neutral seats.
3.0Institutes Offering Female Supernumerary Seats (2026)
According to the JoSAA 2026 Seat Matrix, Female-Only (Supernumerary) seats are available in the following institute categories:
Female-only seats are shown separately in the official JoSAA Seat Matrix under the Gender = Female Only column.
2026 JoSAA Seat Matrix: Female Supernumerary Seat Availability
Based on the JoSAA 2026 Seat Matrix, female-only supernumerary seats are available across the following institutions:
Overall, JoSAA 2026 includes Female-Only seats across participating institutes, with the exact number varying by institute and programme. The official seat matrix should be referred to for branch-wise seat counts.
4.0How to Check Female Supernumerary Seats in the JoSAA Seat Matrix
Candidates can verify Female-Only seats by following these steps:
- Visit the official JoSAA Seat Matrix portal.
- Select the institute type (IIT, NIT, IIIT, etc.).
- Choose the institute.
- Select the desired B.Tech programme.
- View the seat matrix.
- Check the Gender column:
- Gender-Neutral
- Female Only
The Female Only rows indicate the number of supernumerary seats available for that programme.
5.0Benefits of Female Supernumerary Seats
Female candidates receive several advantages through this policy:
- Opportunity to compete in both Gender-Neutral and Female-Only seat pools.
- Improved chances of admission to top institutes.
- Better access to high-demand branches such as CSE, AI, ECE, and IT.
- Increased female representation in engineering education.
- No reduction in seats available to male candidates, as these are additional seats.
6.0Important Points About Female Supernumerary Seats
- These seats are available only to female candidates.
- Male candidates cannot apply for or be allotted Female-Only seats.
- Female candidates are automatically considered according to the JoSAA seat allocation rules.
- Female-Only cutoffs are often different from Gender-Neutral cutoffs and may extend to higher closing ranks because the competition pool is smaller.
