JoSAA Counselling 2026: Registration, Dates, Eligibility, Choice Filling, Seat Allotment & Complete Admission Process

Latest Update (July 10 2026): JoSAA Round 4 Seat Allotment 2026 is now out. Candidates can log in to the official JoSAA portal to check their allotted seat and complete the next admission steps by July 15, 2026.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the centralized counselling process for admission to India's premier engineering institutes, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur, and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). Every year, lakhs of engineering aspirants who qualify JEE Main and JEE Advanced participate in the JoSAA counselling process to secure admission into undergraduate engineering, architecture, and planning programmes.

JoSAA Counselling 2026 is expected to begin shortly after the declaration of the JEE Advanced 2026 results. The entire admission process is conducted online and includes registration, choice filling, mock seat allotment, choice locking, seat allotment, online document verification, seat acceptance fee payment, and reporting to the allotted institute. Candidates must complete each stage within the prescribed deadlines to confirm their admission.

This guide provides complete information about JoSAA Counselling 2026, including registration, eligibility criteria, important dates, participating institutes, counselling procedures, seat allotment processes, required documents, counselling fees, opening and closing ranks, and other important admission-related details.

1.0What is JoSAA Counselling?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is an autonomous body established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to conduct a unified counselling process for admissions to centrally funded technical institutions. Instead of applying separately to different institutes, candidates participate in a single counselling process through the official JoSAA portal to obtain admission based on their JEE ranks.

JoSAA simplifies the admission process by allocating seats according to a candidate's merit, category, preferences, seat availability, and reservation policies. It ensures transparency and fairness while providing students with multiple opportunities to upgrade their allotted seat across various counselling rounds.

Admissions through JoSAA are offered to the following institutions:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
  • National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
  • Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)
  • Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur
  • Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)

For the 2026–27 academic session, JoSAA will conduct counselling for 138 participating institutes, making it the largest centralized engineering admission process in India.

Unlike state-level counselling authorities, JoSAA offers admission only to centrally funded institutions. Candidates seeking admission to state engineering colleges must participate separately in their respective state counselling processes.

Step 4: Complete Registration

Accept the declaration and complete the registration process. Once registered successfully, candidates can proceed to choice filling.

Step 5: Proceed to Choice Filling

Candidates can now explore all participating institutes and available branches before selecting their preferred choices.

Tip: Before filling choices, carefully read the JoSAA Business Rules to understand the seat allocation process, reservation policies, and counselling guidelines.

7.0JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling and Choice Locking

Choice filling is one of the most important stages of JoSAA counselling. During this stage, candidates select the institutes and academic programmes they wish to join. Since seat allotment is based on the order of preferences submitted by the candidate, careful planning can significantly improve admission outcomes.

Candidates can choose from hundreds of institute–branch combinations available across IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur, and GFTIs.

How to Fill Choices

After registration, candidates should:

  1. Search for their preferred institutes.
  2. Select the desired programme or branch.
  3. Add it to the choice list.
  4. Repeat the process until all preferred options have been added.
  5. Rearrange the choices according to preference.

There is no restriction on the number of choices that can be filled. Candidates are encouraged to include a balanced list of dream, realistic, and safe options to maximize their chances of seat allotment.

8.0Rearranging Choices

The order of choices plays a crucial role in seat allotment. Candidates can move, reorder, insert, or delete choices any number of times before the choice-locking deadline.

A well-planned preference list should prioritize institutes and branches based on the candidate's genuine interest rather than solely on previous years' cutoffs.

9.0Manual Choice Locking

After finalizing the preference order, candidates should manually lock their choices before the deadline. Once locked, the choices become final and cannot be modified for that counselling cycle.

Candidates are advised to download and keep a copy of the locked choices for future reference.

10.0Auto Locking of Choices

If a candidate forgets to manually lock the choices before the deadline, the system automatically locks the last saved choices after the choice-filling window closes.

Although auto-locking prevents the choices from being discarded, candidates should avoid relying on it, as there may not be sufficient time to review or rearrange the preference list before the deadline.

Tips for Better Choice Filling

  • Fill as many relevant choices as possible.
  • Arrange choices strictly in the order of your preference.
  • Refer to previous years' opening and closing ranks before finalizing the list.
  • Include a mix of ambitious, moderate, and safe options.
  • Review the choice list carefully before locking.

11.0Mock Seat Allotment

To help candidates understand their admission prospects, JoSAA conducts two mock seat allotments before the final choice-locking deadline. Mock allotments are based on the choices submitted by candidates and the available seat matrix at that point in time. These allotments are indicative and do not guarantee the final seat allocation.

12.0JoSAA 2026 Seat Allotment Process

Once the choice-filling window closes, JoSAA conducts seat allotment based on an automated allocation algorithm. Seats are allotted strictly according to merit, candidate preferences, reservation rules, and seat availability. JoSAA generally conducts multiple rounds of seat allotment, allowing candidates to accept their allotted seat or seek an upgrade in subsequent rounds.

What Happens After Seat Allotment?

After a seat is allotted, candidates must:

  1. View the allotment result.
  2. Choose one of the willingness options (Freeze, Float, or Slide).
  3. Upload the required documents.
  4. Pay the seat acceptance fee.
  5. Complete online document verification.
  6. Report to the allotted institute as per the schedule after the final round.

Failure to complete these steps within the specified timeline may lead to cancellation of the allotted seat.

13.0Freeze, Float and Slide Options

After every round of seat allotment, candidates are required to select one of the willingness options—Freeze, Float, or Slide. The selected option determines whether the candidate wishes to retain the allotted seat or be considered for an upgrade in future rounds.

Understanding these options is crucial, as the choice cannot be changed after the allotted reporting period for that round.

Freeze vs Float vs Slide

Branch Change

Freeze

❌ No

❌ No

❌ No

Float

Slide

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • Freeze if you are completely satisfied with your allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds.
  • Float if you want to keep your current seat while remaining eligible for a better institute or programme in future rounds.
  • Slide if you are happy with the allotted institute but want a preferred branch within the same institute.

Choosing the appropriate willingness option based on your admission goals can significantly influence your final seat allotment.

14.0Document Verification & Reporting

After a candidate is allotted a seat through JoSAA counselling, the next important step is online document verification and seat acceptance. During this stage, candidates must upload the required documents, pay the seat acceptance fee, and complete all formalities within the prescribed deadline. Only candidates who successfully complete document verification and fee payment can retain their allotted seat for further admission.

JoSAA verifies each candidate's academic qualifications, category details, identity, and eligibility before confirming the admission. Any discrepancy or failure to submit the required documents may lead to the cancellation of the allotted seat.

15.0Documents Required for JoSAA Counselling 2026

Candidates should keep both original documents and scanned copies ready before the counselling process begins. While the exact document list will be mentioned in the JoSAA Information Brochure 2026, the commonly required documents include:

18.0JoSAA Counselling Fees 2026

Candidates who are allotted a seat must pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) to confirm their willingness to participate in the admission process. The fee must be paid online within the stipulated deadline. The Seat Acceptance Fee is adjusted against the institute admission fee after successful admission.

Seat Acceptance Fee: The category-wise seat acceptance fee is generally as follows:

Category

Seat Acceptance Fee*

SC / ST / PwD

₹15,000

All Other Categories

₹30,000

*The fee mentioned above is based on the previous year's counselling process. The updated fee for JoSAA Counselling 2026 will be announced in the official Information Brochure.

Payment Modes: Candidates can pay the Seat Acceptance Fee using any of the following online payment methods:

  • Net Banking
  • Debit Card
  • Credit Card
  • UPI
  • Other online payment options available on the JoSAA portal

After successful payment, candidates should download and save the payment receipt for future reference.

19.0Refund Policy

The refund of the Seat Acceptance Fee is governed by the JoSAA Business Rules. If a candidate withdraws from counselling or if the seat is cancelled under applicable provisions, the refund (if any) will be processed after deducting the prescribed charges, as notified by JoSAA.

Candidates are advised to read the latest refund policy before making any decision regarding seat withdrawal.

20.0What If You're Not Eligible for JoSAA Counselling?

If you're not eligible for JoSAA counselling, you still have several options depending on the reason for your ineligibility:

If you didn't qualify JEE Main or don't meet JoSAA eligibility criteria, you cannot participate in JoSAA for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs.

Apply through state engineering counselling, such as KCET, MHT CET, REAP, WBJEE, or other state admission processes, if you're eligible.

Consider private universities that conduct their own admissions (e.g., BITS, VIT, SRM, Manipal, KIIT) or accept JEE Main scores.

Look for institute-level admissions where colleges have their own counselling or management quota seats, if applicable.
