Waves is a major topic in competitive exams. These solutions provide the derivation skills needed for board exams and the numerical shortcuts (like beat frequency and Doppler shifts) required for the fast-paced JEE and NEET environments.

A progressive wave is a wave that is propagating through a medium transferring energy from one point to another. The energy in a stationary wave is "trapped" between nodes and the wave pattern looks like it is standing still and not moving forward.

Beats are primarily used by musicians to tune instruments. When two instruments play the same note slightly out of tune, the "waxing and waning" (beats) can be heard. The instruments are perfectly in tune when the beat frequency becomes zero.

In transverse waves, particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. In longitudinal waves, particles vibrate parallel to the direction of wave propagation.

Nodes are points in a stationary wave where the particles have zero displacement, while antinodes are points where the particles have maximum displacement.
