Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is a prestigious mathematics competition organized by the Australian Maths Trust for students in years 3–12 in Australia and their equivalent grades in other countries. The competition has increased significantly since its inception in 1976, with around 600,000 participants, including approximately 100,000 from outside Australia, making it the world's most extensive mathematics competition. 

The AMC is a highly anticipated event, with the 2025 competition scheduled from Tuesday, 6 to Thursday, 8 August. The AMC awards outstanding results within each year group for their state, territory, or country, with medals being awarded to exceptional students. The competition aims to demonstrate the importance and relevance of mathematics in students' everyday lives and allows students to display or discover their problem-solving talent. The AMC has a rich history, with its forerunner first held in 1976 in the Australian Capital Territory, attracting 1,200 entries. The competition became a national event in 1978, and it is now Australia's longest-running, largest, and most well-known mathematics competition for school students. The competition has also expanded internationally, engaging students in over 30 countries worldwide.

3.0Australian Mathematics Competition Latest Syllabus and Exam Pattern

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is designed to cater to students across different age groups and proficiency levels, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of mathematical aptitude. Understanding the exam syllabus and pattern is crucial for adequate preparation. Here's what you need to know:

Question and Answer Format:

  • The exam comprises 30 questions in total.
  • Among these, 25 are multiple-choice, while 5 require integer answers.
  • The competition lasts 60 minutes for primary divisions and for secondary divisions, 75 minutes.

Delivery Format:

  • The AMC is conducted online, providing students with a convenient platform to showcase their mathematical prowess.
  • Alternatively, the exam may be available on printed paper, catering to individual preferences and logistical considerations.

4.0Eligibility of the Australian Mathematics Competition

Students of all ages and educational levels are welcome to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). Participation in the AMC is typically determined based on the student's grade level. The following participants are eligible:

  • Middle Primary Division: Students in Australian Years 3 and 4.
  • Upper Primary Division: Students in Australian Years 5 and 6.
  • Junior Division: Students in Australian Years 7 and 8.
  • Intermediate Division: Students in Australian Years 9 and 10.
  • Senior Division: Students in Australian Years 11 and 12.

5.0Australian Mathematics Competition 2025 Registration

  • In most cases, schools are responsible for registering their students for the competition. 
  • Schools from many countries worldwide are included in the Australian Mathematics Trust's register, including almost every school in Australia. 
  • Each February, schools receive invitations to register their students for the competition.
  • The registration cost is AUD$8.50 per student.

6.0Australian Mathematics Competition 2025 Result

The results of the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) are typically declared through the following process:

  • After the completion of the competition, all participant responses are carefully assessed and scored by experienced examiners. 
  • The scoring process takes into account the accuracy and completeness of the answers provided by each participant.
  • Once the scoring process is completed, the results for each participant are compiled. This includes calculating the total score achieved by each participant based on the scoring pattern of the competition.
  • Participants receive their results through various means, depending on the registration method and communication preferences selected during registration. 
  • This may include email notifications, online result portals, or postal mail for printed result reports.

7.0Awards and Recognition of AMC Australian Mathematics Competition

Awards or recognition may be given to exceptional performers based on their performance in the competition. They may receive certificates, medals, and other accolades for their accomplishments.

Below is a list of criteria that all students must meet to receive an award.

Award Type

Description

Participation

It is awarded to students who participate in the competition and do not receive a higher award.

Proficiency

It is awarded to students who achieve a pre-set score demonstrating competency in mathematical problem-solving to Australian standards.

Credit

They are awarded to students who rank in the top 55% of their year and region (60% for the Senior division) and do not receive a higher award.

Distinction

They are awarded to students who rank in the top 20% of their year and region (25% for the Senior division) and still need a higher award.

High Distinction

They are given to students who finish in the top 3% of their year and region (top 5% in the Senior division) and do not receive a higher award.

Prize

Awarded to exceptional students based on region and year group criteria, generally at most 1 per 300 students. Includes a lapel pin and voucher for the online shop.

Best in School

Awarded to the student with the best overall result in a school, adjusted for year level, if at least a Distinction, and with a minimum number of entries in the school.

Cheryl Praeger Medal

It is awarded to the top-scoring female student in each year level in Australia (Secondary divisions only).

AMC Medals

They are given to students who achieve exceptional results in their year group for their state, territory, or country. Generally, at most, 1 in 5000 students receive a medal.

Peter O’Halloran Award

Awarded to students achieving a perfect score, irrespective of other awards. Named in honour of Mr Peter O'Halloran.

Note: Award cut-off scores are set by comparing a student's performance with others in the same region and year level. These scores can vary yearly depending on competition difficulty. In smaller areas, cut-off scores may be determined by combining year levels.
