Singapore and Asian School Math Olympiad 2024

The SASMO (Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad) 2024 is a well-known Math contest in Asia with many participants from different countries. It's organized by the Singapore International Math Contests Centre (SIMCC) and backed by the Singapore Scholastic Trust and SASMO Advisory Council (SAC). SASMO helps students enhance their Math skills, develop advanced thinking abilities, and get familiar with international competitions. Top performers will receive Gold (8%), Silver (12%), and Bronze (20%) awards. Students should know the exam's structure, length, question types, and content areas to rank higher in the exam.

1.0What is SASMO?

The SASMO International Math Olympiad, established in 2006, stands as one of the premier math competitions in Asia. By 2019, it drew over 30,000 participants from 21 countries, expanding to include more than 35 countries and territories by 2021.

SASMO's contests are designed to challenge students' latent thinking abilities, setting high standards that not only enhance their performance in school mathematics but also develop their advanced thinking skills (HOTS).

This competition can help improve the students’ math grades because they can apply problem-solving strategies learnt during the training to their daily school mathematics.

6.0SASMO 2024 Exam Pattern

The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad 2024 (SASMO) welcomes students from various academic levels to participate in the competition. Specifically, SASMO is open to students in Primary 1 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4, and JC1/2 (Grades 1 to 12 for international school students).

During the contest, participants are allocated a total of 90 minutes to complete the examination. The paper is divided into two sections, each with a different set of questions:

Section A: This section consists of 15 Multiple Choice Questions. Each correct answer is awarded 2 points, while unanswered questions receive 0 points. However, for each incorrect answer, 1 point is deducted.

Section B: The second section presents 10 Non-routine Questions. Participants earn 4 points for each correct answer, and there is no penalty for wrong answers.

In total, the maximum achievable score is 85 points. To ensure that participants do not receive negative scores, each student begins with 15 bonus points.

7.0How to Prepare for SASMO?

By following these steps, beginners can enhance their preparation for SASMO and increase their chances of achieving excellent results.

  • To excel in the SASMO competition, it is crucial for beginners to develop a strong understanding of the syllabus and topics covered.
  • Start by thoroughly analyzing the subjects and concepts that are tested in the exam. It is essential to master the necessary knowledge points and formulas that are required for success.
  • Students must also be able to apply that knowledge effectively to solve complex questions. This requires practicing and honing problem-solving skills.
  • Once students have gained confidence in their understanding and application of concepts, they should challenge themselves by taking mock exams and engaging in timed practices that simulate real exam conditions.

8.0SASMO Sample Papers

Utilizing sample papers is one of the most effective approaches to familiarizing yourself with the range and types of questions that you may encounter in the exam. It is like a magical tool that allows students to optimize their exam time with a resourceful and well-planned strategy.

Engaging in regular, focused, dedicated, and consistent practice with sample papers is the key to achieving success in these types of exams. By practicing numerous previous year questions and regularly taking mock tests, students can significantly improve their scores in the actual examination.
