National Standard Examination in Physics
The National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) is the doorway for Indian students who dream of representing their country in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). Organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), NSEP is the beginning of five strict steps leading to the international stage.
In this comprehensive manual, we will guide you through every stage of NSEP 2025–26 — from eligibility to registration process, exam pattern, important dates, and preparation tips — specifically for Physics aspirants.
1.0What is NSEP?
NSEP is a country-level competitive test for students of Class XII or lower having a deep interest in Physics. More than 2 lakh students from all over India take this test annually, and it is one of the biggest physics competitions held in India. High-scoring students proceed to the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) and further.

3.0NSEP 2025-26 Exam Pattern
Effective preparation requires an understanding of the exam pattern, particularly for a competitive exam such as the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP). It assists students in organising their approach, effectively managing their time, and avoiding typical errors. Below is a clear summary of the NSEP 2025–26 exam pattern provided by ALLEN to assist candidates in their journey.
4.0NSEP 2025-26 Syllabus
With a focus on conceptual clarity and application-based problem-solving, the NSEP 2025–26 syllabus closely resembles the CBSE curriculum for Classes 11 and 12. Modern physics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, waves and oscillations, thermodynamics, mechanics, and optics are among the subjects covered. Although the curriculum is in line with physics taught in schools, it is more challenging and calls for more in-depth conceptual integration and analytical thinking. Questions based on observational and experimental skills may also be included in the test.
5.0Eligibility Criteria for NSEP 2025-26
Students must confirm that they fulfil the necessary eligibility requirements prior to registering for the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) 2025–2026. IAPT established these rules to ensure consistency and fairness in the selection procedure. An outline of the main eligibility requirements that each candidate should be aware of is provided below.
To participate in NSEP 2025-26, the student must
- Hold an Indian passport
- Be born between 1st July 2006 and 30th June 2011
- Be admitted and studying in India as of November 30, 2023, or prior
- Not having cleared Class 12 board exams prior to November 30, 2025
- Not be admitted to a university or equivalent college before 1st June 2025
- Do not take NSEJS 2025-26 at the same time
6.0How to Register for NSEP 2025-26?
It is mandatory that students register for NSEP 2025–26 since this is the official way to enrol in the first stage of the Physics Olympiad programme of India. If a student doesn't register ,they won't be able to appear for the exam or progress to subsequent stages such as INPhO or IPhO.
- Visit the official registration website at (iapt.org.in/)
- Click on the registration option.
- Enter all the details on the student registration page and click 'Generate OTP.'
- Then, after successful registration, log in again using the provided credentials and fill in all the details required.
- Upload the documents needed and fill in the required information.
- Finally, submit the registration form.
- This process ensures your registration for the National Standard Examination in Physics 2025-26.
7.0Registration Fee for NSEP 2025-26
Students can register through the IAPT-listed authorised exam centres or their individual schools. On the official website, the precise cost, method of payment, and due dates will be disclosed.
- Fee: ₹300 per student per subject
- Mode: Paid online at the time of enrollment
- Refund: Non-refundable
- Students moving to subsequent stages are not required to pay any additional fees until the international stage.
8.0Pathway to IPhO: The Five Stages
From NSEP to the international level, there are five competitive stages in India's International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) journey. Deep conceptual understanding and analytical abilities are put to the test at each level. ALLEN provides professional advice, targeted study materials, and Olympiad pathway-specific strategic preparation to help candidates at every stage.
- NSEP 2025-26: First stage, held across the country in NOV 2025.
- INPhO 2026: Held in Jan/Feb 2026 for shortlisted students
- OCSC: Orientation-cum-selection camp for the best ~35 students
- Pre-Departure Camp: Comprehensive training in theory and experiments
- International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026: To be held in July 2026
9.0Awards & Recognition
Prominent certificates and merit awards from IAPT and HBCSE are given to students who perform exceptionally well in the NSEP and later phases. INPhO medals are awarded to top performers who make it to the OCSC (Orientation-Cum-Selection Camp).
At the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), Indian finalists receive academic opportunities, national recognition, and international medals (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) based on their performance.
- OCSC participants get Gold Medals and Merit Certificates
- Topper at the National & State levels are awarded
- Top 8 students from INPhO may be selected to participate in the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO)
10.0Here’s how ALLEN Modules Provide an Edge in Preparation
When it comes to Olympiad preparation, having the right study material can make all the difference. ALLEN’s specially designed modules give students a competitive edge by offering in-depth theory, targeted practice, and strategically structured content aligned with Olympiad requirements. Here's how these modules enhance preparation and boost performance.
1. Structured According to the Syllabus
ALLEN modules are strictly aligned with the official NSEP syllabus,lesser-known covering topics from both Class 11 and Class 12 Physics as well as related mathematical concepts. Every module starts with a topic-wise division that enables students:
- To identify the high-weightage and key topics
- To distinguish between known and unknown areas
- To focus on clearing concepts from the starting point itself
2. Strategic Topic Progression
The modules are handpicked in a step-by-step sequence, beginning with basic ideas and progressing to sophisticated applications. This is ideally suited to the suggested strategy of:
- Completing the entire syllabus at least a month prior to the exam
- Dedicating extra time to challenging or lesser-knownyear's chapters
3. NCERT-Centric with Competitive Edge
ALLEN modules follow NCERT outlines but extend beyond the textbook to align with Olympiad-level depth. They consist of:
- Concept builders after each topic
- Application-based examples
- HOTS (High Order Thinking Skills) questions for in-depth learning
4. Previous Year Question Practice
ALLEN modules have:
- A specially designed section of the previous year's NSEP and INPhO questions
- Step-by-step reasoning solved examples
- Model test papers added by expert faculties to mimic real exam scenarios
- Practice develops comfort with question types and enhances speed and accuracy.
5. Reference-Backed Enrichment
Every module is aided by references and analysis from Olympiad-level books, allowing students to:
- Learn beyond board-level concepts
- Get ready for complex problems without being intimidated
