International Biology Olympiad 2024

The International Biology Olympiad is a competition for secondary school students. The competition occurs annually in July and is hosted by one of the member countries of the IBO Association. This year, the IBO 2024 is organized by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Through this competition, students' ability to tackle biological problems and conduct experiments is assessed. Interest in Biology, creativity, inventiveness, and perseverance are essential for participants. Each member country nominates four students who are winners of their national competitions. In this article, we will explore the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) exam, its structure, the topics covered, and its significance in promoting Biology education and fostering international scientific collaboration.

1.0About International Biology Olympiad 2024

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is like a big science competition for high school students worldwide. It tests their understanding of biology. This year's IBO in 2024 is all about bioinformatics, a mix of biology, math, statistics, computer science, and data science. It's happening in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The main goals of the IBO are:

  • To get more people interested in biology and related sciences.
  • To give students from different countries a chance to compete together.
  • To inspire more research and progress in biology.

4.0International Biology Olympiad Eligibility

To participate in the competition, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Winners of NBO: Competitors must be the winners of the National Biology Olympiad (NBO) held in the current school year in the country they represent.
  • School Enrollment: Competitors should be enrolled as students in a regular secondary school for general education in the country they represent.
  • Training Limitation: Competitors must have not received training or instruction within a selected group of 50 or fewer students, including the IBO team, for longer than two weeks.
  • Age Requirement: Competitors should be born on 1 July or later in the year of the competition, minus twenty.

5.0How to Apply for the International Biology Olympiad?

The main requirement for participating in the IBO Competition is to join the IBO Association. Here are the summarized requirements for membership:

  1. You must be the organizer of a National Biology Olympiad (NBO) and have official recognition from the Ministry of Education or an equivalent authority.
  2. You need to provide an up-to-date description of your NBO and contact information.
  3. You must follow the rules of the IBO Association, the operational guidelines, and the decisions made by the General Assembly (GA).
  4. You are required to pay an annual membership fee to the IBO Association.

The General Assembly makes decisions about membership and exclusions, usually during the Annual General Meeting held during the IBO Competition.

6.0Exam Pattern of International Biology Olympiad India

Exam Pattern helps you to understand the detailed structure of how the exam will be conducted. It provides information about the questions, markings, durations, and more. So, here is a brief overview of the exam pattern of IBO 2024:

The IBO test has two parts: the theoretical component and the practical component. It covers cell biology, molecular biology, the anatomy and physiology of plants and animals, animal behaviour, genetics and evolution, ecology, and biosystematics.

Both theoretical and practical marks contribute equal amounts to the total score, approximately half each.

Timing and Location:

The IBO Competition takes place annually in July in one of the IBO Association member countries.

Examination Format:

The IBO Competition comprises both theoretical and practical (experimental) examinations.

The recommended duration for each part is four to six hours, with a break for refreshment.

There must be a minimum one-day interval between the two examinations.

Question Point Allocation:

Points available for each question must be communicated to the participants.

Error carried forward must be applied for marking in all exams, where applicable.

7.0International Biology Olympiad Previous Years Papers

Students appearing for the IBO 2025 exam can refer to previous years' question papers to understand the exam structure and marking scheme. These IBO past papers will also help them increase their speed for the actual exam, and they will gain confidence to perform well on the main exam day. The International Biology Olympiad 2024's past year's papers can be accessed from the IBO's official website.

8.0International Biology Olympiad Results

The process for announcing the exam results of IBO 2024 involves several key steps. Firstly, the International Jury is tasked with carefully reviewing and approving the official results, along with any awards conferred to individual competitors, before their announcement by the host.

It's important to note that the results will be proclaimed individually rather than as a collective national team outcome. Additionally, each participant will receive a certificate recognizing their participation in the IBO.

It's emphasized that all deliberations remain confidential until the official announcement of the results, maintaining fairness and impartiality throughout the evaluation process.

9.0International Biology Olympiad 2024 Awards

The IBO awards are given to the top-performing students at IBO. The t-score method determines winners by carefully considering both practical and theoretical marks.

Following are the details of the IBO awards:

  • Gold Medal
  • Silver Medal
  • Bronze Medal
  • Certificate of Merit.
