Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)

The Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) is the second stage of India's Mathematics talent search examination. As part of the six-stage Mathematical Olympiad program, it serves as a stepping stone for students to showcase their mathematical talent and potentially compete at the global level in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Regional Coordinators conduct the RMO under the guidance of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). The RMO aims to assess students' problem-solving and logical thinking abilities. To be eligible for the RMO, students must first clear the All-India Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO) examination, which serves as a preliminary round to determine who will compete in it.

The RMO is held at selected centers within each region. In this article, we will look into the details and benefits of participating in the RMO, along with preparation tips and insights into the subsequent stages of the Mathematical Olympiad program.

1.0What is the Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO)?

The second stage examination, the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), is a rigorous three-hour test comprising six challenging problems. These problems require difficulty and sophistication and are designed to assess the student's depth of understanding and problem-solving skills in Mathematics.

The primary purpose of the RMO is to identify and nurture mathematical talent among high school students, allowing them to develop their skills and compete at higher levels. Success in the RMO can lead to participation in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) and, eventually, the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which inspires students to gain an in-depth passion for mathematics and to pursue careers and additional education in this important area.

2.0Stages of the Mathematical Olympiad Program

As you know, the RMO exam is the second of the six stages that lead to participation in the IMO Olympiad. So, what are the other stages that provide a rigorous selection process, allowing talented students to represent their country at the prestigious IMO and EGMO competitions are as follows:

  1. Stage 1 - Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM): The first step in the selection process for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM). It is open to students from Classes 8 to 12.
  2. Regional Maths Olympiad (RMO): This is a three-hour written test with six problems. Based on their RMO performance, up to 30 students from each region are selected for the next stage.
  3. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO): Held in January, this four-hour written test is open to students selected in the RMO and those who have received an INMO certificate of merit.
  4. International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC): Selected INMO awardees attend a month-long training camp at the Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai. Previous awardees and eligible female students also participate.
  5. Pre-Departure Training Camps: The final team undergoes additional training and orientation for about ten days before departing for the IMO. Girl students selected for the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) also receive a pre-departure camp.
  6. Stage - 6 - International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO): The Mathematical Olympiad program culminates in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which is the highest-level competition. The world's top young mathematicians come together for it.

4.0RMO 2024 Examination Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the Regional Maths Olympiads (RMO) 2024, students must meet specific requirements based on their class and performance. Below are the detailed RMO 2024 Exam eligibility criteria:

  1. Category A: Students from classes 8, 9, 10, and 11 will be classified as Category A contestants.
  2. Category B: Students from class 12 will be classified as Category B contestants.

Qualification Criteria:

From each region:

Category A:

  • The top 30 students will qualify for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) 2024.
  • In case of ties at the 30th position, the scores from IOQM 2023 will be used to break the tie.
  • Additionally, 5 female students, irrespective of their ranks in the top 30, will qualify for INMO 2024 under the Girls’ quota.

Category B:

  • The top 6 students will qualify for INMO 2024.
  • Ties at the 6th position will be resolved using the IOQM 2023 scores.

Girls’ Quota

There is no separate Girls’ quota for Category B. As specified above, a female student in Category B must be among the top 6 students to qualify for INMO 2024.
