National Standard Examination in Chemistry
The National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC) is the entry point for Indian students aspiring to represent the country in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Organisedstudents in Class XII or below who have by the Indian Association of Chemistry Teachers (IACT) and administered through IAPT, NSEC is the first of five stages that lead to the international level.
1.0What is NSEC?
NSEC is a national-level exam for students in Class XII or below who have a strong interest in Chemistry. Every year, over a lakh students appear for NSEC, and top performers progress to the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO).

7.0Pathway to IPhO: The Five Stages
India's path to the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) consists of five competitive stages, starting from the NSEC and ending at the international level. With increasingly difficult problems, each level assesses students' conceptual knowledge, critical thinking, and chemistry application abilities.
- NSEC 2025-26: First stage, held across the country in November 2025
- INChO 2026: Held in January/February 2026 for shortlisted students
- OCSC: Orientation-cum-Selection Camp for the top ~35 students in Chemistry
- Pre-Departure Camp: Intensive training in theory and experiments
- International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026: To be held in July 2026 in Uzbekistan
8.0Awards & Recognition
Students who excel in NSEC and later Chemistry Olympiad stages are given distinguished certificates and merit awards from IAPT and HBCSE. Top performers who make it to the OCSC (Orientation-Cum-Selection Camp) are awarded INChO medals.
- OCSC participants get Gold Medals and Merit Certificates
- Topper at National & State level are awarded
- Top 8 students from INPhO may be selected to participate in Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO)
