MHT CET Counselling

MHT CET Counselling 2026

Securing a high percentile in the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT CET) is an incredible achievement, but it only represents 50% of the journey toward your dream college. The remaining 50% of the battle is won through the Centralized Admission Process (CAP), commonly referred to as MHT CET Counselling 2026. Conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra, this process is the official gateway for admission into first-year undergraduate technical courses in Engineering and Technology (B.E./B.Tech), Pharmacy (B.Pharm/Pharm.D), and Planning (B.Planning) for the academic year 2026-27.

Understanding the nuances of the CAP rounds, from document verification to the strategic filling of the option form, is critical. Many students with excellent ranks lose out on top-tier institutes like VJTI Mumbai or COEP Pune due to simple procedural errors or a lack of understanding of rules like 'Auto-Freeze' and 'Betterment'. This article extracts the latest data from official sources to provide a roadmap for navigating the MHT CET Counselling 2026 successfully.

1.0What is MHT CET CAP 2026?

CAP stands for the Centralized Admission Process. It is a single-window system designed to ensure transparency and merit-based seat distribution across various government, government-aided, and unaided private professional educational institutes in Maharashtra. The authority will conduct MHT CET CAP 2026 in several rounds—typically three or four—to fill available seats based on candidate merit and preferences.

Only candidates who have qualified for the MHT CET 2026 and possess a valid score are eligible to participate in the counselling process. Additionally, the authority offers seats based on JEE (Main) 2026 scores for All India Candidature seats, where JEE Main scores are often preferred over MHT CET scores for B.E./B.Tech admissions.

3.0Eligibility Criteria for MHT CET Counselling 2026

To participate in the Centralized Admission Process, candidates must meet specific academic and residency requirements defined by the State CET Cell.

1. Maharashtra State Candidature

  • Academic: Candidates must have passed HSC (Class 12) or its equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • Minimum Marks: At least 45% marks in the above subjects (at least 40% marks for candidates belonging to Reserved categories, EWS, and Persons with Disability belonging to Maharashtra State only).
  • Candidature Type: Candidates can claim one of the state candidature types (Type A to E) based on domicile, parent's employment, or residency in disputed border areas.

2. All India Candidature

  • Candidates must have a Diploma in Engineering and Technology or an equivalent qualification.
  • They must obtain at least 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/EWS) to be eligible.
  • For B.E./B.Tech, a valid JEE (Main) 2026 score is highly recommended as it is given preference over MHT CET scores for All India seats.

3. Minority and Other Categories

  • Minority Candidature: Candidates belonging to specific Linguistic or Religious Minority communities within Maharashtra are eligible for reserved seats in minority institutions.
  • NRI/OCI/PIO: Children of NRIs, OCIs, and PIOs are generally exempted from appearing for MHT CET 2026 but must participate in the registration process for admission.

4.0Step-by-Step CAP Process 2026

The MHT CET Counselling 2026 is a structured multi-step process. Accuracy at each stage is vital for securing a seat.

Step 1: Online Registration

Candidates must register on the official website cetcell.mahacet.org. During this phase, you will create a unique Application Number and Log-In ID. You must provide personal details, academic scores, and specify your candidature type. It is mandatory to use the official portal, and information must match your Aadhaar Card and APAAR ID.

Step 2: Document Verification (Scrutiny)

Once the online form is submitted, candidates must have their documents verified. The State CET Cell sets up Scrutiny Centres (SC) across the state for this purpose.

  • The Role of SCs: Scrutiny Centres assist candidates in scanning and uploading necessary documents. They are responsible for verifying original documents and stamping the printed application form.
  • Receipt-cum-Acknowledgment: After successful verification, the SC will issue a receipt-cum-acknowledgment, which is a crucial document for all future admission steps.
  • Cost: Scrutiny Centres are strictly prohibited from charging candidates for these services.

Step 3: Display of Provisional Merit List

The authority releases a provisional merit list based on the scores and category details provided by candidates. Candidates must check this list for any errors in marks, name, or reservation category.

Step 4: Grievance Period

If there is a mistake in the provisional list, a 2-3 day 'Grievance Period' is provided. Candidates must submit proof to correct these errors at their respective Scrutiny Centres. Failure to do so will result in the error becoming permanent on the final list.

Step 5: Final Merit List and Seat Matrix

The Final Merit List is published after addressing all grievances. Simultaneously, the Seat Matrix for CAP Round 1 is released, showing the number of available seats in each college, branch, and category.

Step 6: Option Entry (The 300 College Puzzle)

This is arguably the most critical part of MHT CET Counselling 2026. Candidates can fill up to 300 choices of colleges and courses in order of preference.

  • The Algorithm: The computer algorithm processes your list from top to bottom.
  • The Golden Rule: Always put your 'Dream Colleges' in the top 10, regardless of your rank.
  • The Danger Zone: Never put a college at Number 1 unless you are 100% sure you want to go there, due to the 'Auto-Freeze' rule.

Step 7: Seat Allotment Results

Seat allotment is done strictly based on merit, category, and the preferences filled in the option form. Allotment results for each round are released in PDF format on the official portal.

5.0Understanding 'Freeze' vs. 'Float' (Betterment)

After the Round 1 allotment, candidates face three choices that determine their future rounds:

  1. Auto-Freeze: If you are allotted the college you placed as your First Preference, the system will 'Auto-Freeze' it. You MUST take that seat and pay the acceptance fee. You are automatically disqualified from participating in further CAP rounds.
  2. Self-Freeze: If you are allotted a seat (other than Preference #1) and you are satisfied with it, you can manually select the 'Freeze' option to lock it. You then proceed to the college for admission.
  3. Betterment (Float): If you get a seat but want to try for a better one in the next round, you choose 'Betterment'. You must pay the seat acceptance fee to reserve your current seat while the system looks for a higher preference in Round 2 or 3.

Important Note: The seat acceptance fee for MHT CET 2026 has been increased to ₹2000 for each round of counselling.

6.0MHT CET 2026 Reservation Criteria
